FAQ
For students
I do not meet some of the criteria specified in the application. Is there still a possibility that you will review my application?
- Yes, there is a possibility. Send an email to info.sok.uwc @ gmail.com with an explanation of your situation.
Can I use an essay that I wrote in another occasion?
- Certainly yes, as long as it is your personal essay and please specify if it was published somewhere. However, we would be more satisfied if you choose another topic to write the essay on, while you can submit the "old" essay as a supplement that we would gladly read.
I saw that you offer places only to some of the colleges, but not for the college that I like the most. Is it possible to apply for this college?
- It is not possible to apply exactly for that college, as it is not possible to apply only for one of the colleges offered. The committee has different experiences from different colleges and we believe that we can select the most suitable candidate for each college. Although each college is unique, yet all of them have almost identical academic program and they all share the values of the UWC movement.
I'm interested in attending an educational institution that is not related to the UWC movement. Is it possible to get financial aid in order to achieve this goal?
- Unfortnately, not. We support all the young people who wish to acquire better education, but our goal is to enable the young people from Macedonia to experience UWC as much as possible and due to the limited resources, we have to focus on this mission to its fullest.
Is it guaranteed that I could study abroad after I finish UWC?
- None of the colleges guarantees university enrollment, but all of them offer extensive preparation and support to the students during their stay, and even after if necessary. Bearing that in mind, students from all the colleges have enrolled in the most prestigious universities around the world, often with full or partial scholarships. Not only the IB program, but the entire UWC experience is highly appreciated by the best universities around the world and they gladly seek UWC students.
I like the concept of multiculturalism and meeting people from all around the world, but how good are the colleges accademically?
- The IB program is highly appreciated in the academic world everywhere. UWC is the movement that somehow saved this program by implementing it and improving from year to year. The students from each college approximately achieve results far above the world average, with the Li Po Chun College in Hong Kong (which exists less than 20 years and is constantly on the top) having the highest average and / or most perfect grades (45 is the maximum number of points a student can get, taking into account the usual 6 subjects).
Is the education in one of the UWC colleges better than the education in the Macedonian public or private high schools?
- The IB program is available in several high schools in Macedonia, as well as the possibility for education in English and also a high level of multiculturalism and living in a student campus. However, our subjective attitude, supported by facts, is that the UWC colleges are of a higher quality than any other institution in Macedonia, practically in every context, from academic to cultural and social aspect. Bearing that in mind, we can say that the UWC experience is unique and intense. The task of the Macedonian National Committee is to select students who can represent Macedonia in the colleges at its best, but also those students who will be happy and will benefit from the attending of these colleges.
For parents
Am I allowed to help my child in the preparation of the application?
- We sincerely hope that the whole selection process, including the application, is an educational process for the applicants, and we hope that the questions in the application form are a good start for a productive discussion. Therefore, we fully support the discussions that we would lead with the candidates. However, we are against any interventions and suggestions in the preparation of the application. In fact, no one except the candidate must have an insight into their application.
Does my social status influence the selection of my child?
- Categorically no. The candidate’s chances for selection and attendance at the interviews have no relation to the financial and social status of the parents. Although we ask for that information in our application, if you think that it is possible that the chances of a candidate can change due to the reasons mentioned above, the candidate is allowed not to fill in the fields for information of his parents.
For educators
Can I recommend one of my students for the scholarship?
- Although it is not officially requested from the applicants, we will certainly be positive about the recommendations from professors. Firstly, we ask the professor to tell us something specific about the student and something we can not know from the application. All recommendations, as well as comments and suggestions regarding the work of the committee are reviewed in detail. You can send them to info.sok.uwc @ gmail.com

Is the UWC movement harmful for Macedonia because it takes the best students from the Macedonian schools?
- UWC aims to shape world leaders and leaders in the communities of the students, regardless of their professions, ethnic or sexual orientation. In the last fifteen years (the period in which Macedonian students are being sent to UWC) some students have returned immediately after the completion of their high school, while others are still at university or work abroad. However, all of them have made a significant contribution to Macedonia, not only as ambassadors of Macedonia in the colleges, but later through the transmission of the acquired experiences in Macedonia, even in the work of the committee.
